Ta-daa!

I had a hot date last night. And my husband was not invited (but was allowed to watch). I had been waiting for it for so long that I was giddy all day with anticipation. I couldn't wait for the kids to go to bed to escape. I started to get ready right after supper: hot shower, favorite pyjama and comfy fuzzy socks. You see, I had this important date with myself for the inauguration of my very own craft room! It had been ready for a few weeks, but you know, between kids, work, housework, Christmas preparations and sleep, there was never enough time left to actually create something!

Here is my craft room (yes, it is the laundry room too!):

As for my creation (scrapbook page):

And yes, I am happy!
Et oui, je suis contente!

Ode to Emily... Ode à Emily...

I blog so often about the crazy things that the little one does, that I am afraid that you'll accuse me of favouritism. It is not the case! While little sister is of the "Act now - think later" school of thought, Emily is the wise one, the reasonable one, the thinker. Since she carefully thinks about her actions, they rarely end up in the ridiculously funny outcomes typical to little sister. And if they do, it is usually not a laughing matter, as she is sensitive, our Emily.

She is the kid who will quietly reach for the hand of the little autistic girl when things got too overwhelming for the little girl last year in school. She is the kid who draws a "Get Well" card for her little sister when she is not feeling well. She is the kid who will get on the bus with a heavy heart if her little sister is upset that morning. She is the kid that gives the most fantastic (albeit quick!) shoulder massages when she sees you look tired. She is the kid that will try to stop you from trimming the dog's nails because he doesn't like it.

But don't get fooled, the kid has quite the sense of humour... Those fits of mad giggles are music to my ears. And yes, I'll resort to potty jokes to hear them from time to time!

And here is a recent picture of her, taken with her piano teacher at the Christmas recital on December 5th, at Acadia University. She did extremely well that day!

Magic band-aids... band-aid magiques...

It is a widely know fact among toddlers that the medicinal properties of band-aids are endless. Forget cuts and scrapes, even adults know that! There is a use for band-aids in any ailment. Even for bruised ego... The most colorful are the most powerful. Old plain adult band-aids do not work as well.

Case scenario to show the point: let's meet the participants:
Little girl: 4 years-old. Behaving like a monkey on a kitchen chair.
Daddy: Not 40 years-old. Saying "Don't behave like a monkey on a kitchen chair".
Kitchen chair: 20 years-old. Throws little girl off.
Piano: 90 years-old. Stops little girl's fall by standing in front.
Little girl's toes: 4 years-old. Not as solid as piano. Ouch.
Little girl's vocal cords: 4 years-old. Fully activated on emergency decibel overload mode.
After a quick examination of the toes, it was realised that they had just suffered a good bump. Still, the victim was hysterical. Until Daddy gave her the box of band-aids... Not just one, the box! This is like the holy grail for little kids. Instant quiet as it takes focus to apply band-aids, as evidenced by the picture below...

So, the next time you have a headache on your way to work, remember to try a flashy pink Strawberry Shortcake (or neon green Scooby-Do for the boys) band-aid smack in the middle of your forehead. I have no idea what it will do for your headache, but I can guarantee your coworkers will enjoy!

Freakaboo (et Mélanie) me hantent encore...

Rudolph's babysitter... La gardienne de Rudolphe...

I have quite a reputation to live up to... You see, this morning,Olivia told her little friends at Bev's that her mommy was a vet and she sometimes babysits Rudolph. He apparently gets dropped off at our house because he doesn't always accompany the other reindeer on ChristmasEve...

I think it all started with the big debate on the week-end. Emily is quite concerned because in some movies and books Rudolph doesn't appear. It has very serious real-life implications, like how many carrots to leave out on Christmas Eve: 8 or 9? So, I explained that Rudolph was still very young and more than likely still in training or easily tired. So Santa only takes him out on foggy Christmas Eves... If the night is clear, he can probably stay home. I meant the North Pole, but I can now see how the idea popped in Olivia's brain. And when wide-eyed Emily asked in wonder how I knew the stuff, I said that it is because I am a vet.

And I think the antlers didn't help... At work, I accumulated antlers from various species of cervids, and they are quite popular in school and preschool at Christmas time. The reindeer ones are a sure hit, because they are the only species where both males and females have antlers. And I happened to have both in my collection. Oh man, I hope she didn't tell the preschool kids that mommy has Rudolph's antlers...

Christmas Eve better be a foggy one for Rudolph to be needed on Santa's sleigh... I don't feel like babysitting a reindeer this year...!

The song... La chanson...

Christmas songs are dangerous. One could say evil even. Little kids (and 7 year-old too, even though they are big kids at that age!) take them literally. This is why I get slighlty shocked but highly fascinated looks every time "I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" comes on. It is usually accompanied by giggling and finger-pointing in my direction! This can be like torture as you cannot explain the song unless you ruin the magic for the little believers. So to avoid condeming them to a life of therapy ("my mother ruined SC for me at a vulnerable age" said from a couch in the future), I merrily let them believe that their mother is a tramp who would kiss any old fat guy who happens to show up through the chimney! And while they are scandalised at my behavior, it doesn't affect their esteem of the big guy. "Hey, as long as you show up with present, do anything you want to our mom! But we'll tell daddy though!" And girls, you better tell Mommy if you see Daddy kissing the Tooth Fairy!

Now, about taking songs literally, I think I'm going to go listen to "Grandma got run over by a reindeer"...All right, all right, I'm joking!

Les chansons de Noël, c'est dangereux! On pourrait dire diabolique même.

Not tonight honey...

First, a big thank you to Bev, day-care provider extraordinaire, for sharing the following gem with me. It arrived by e-mail during a rough week at work, making the laugh that much more appreciated. The names have been modified to protect the anonymity of the other children.

Olivia(4), B (girl - 3) and S (boy - 4 - previously known as her husband, see "Single Again" post on October 1st) were playing what they call mommy and baby. Olivia being the mommy and B being the baby. S came over and wanted to be the cat but Olivia really wanted him to be the baby. So he did some fast talking and came up with "No, why don't we just make up a baby." Olivia gave him the biggest smile and said "Well, I really like you but I don't want to do that right now!"

You go girl!

Salute to Quebec friends...

Since it is the beginning of december, I thought I would take some pictures outside the house to create a holiday mood with these few winter scenes. I did it thinking of my family and friends in Quebec. I hope you like this late Fall as much as I do!

Freakaboo is dead... again! Freakaboo est mort... encore!

It is with great fake sadness that I announce the passing of Freakaboo II. He will not be missed. The story of Freakaboo however, deserves to be told.

It all started on a stormy night, in the winter of 2004. Actually, it started before then, when Freakaboo moved in, but I don't remember exactly when he did... I think he was the result of a grandmother Frenchy shopping expedition (Any toy that makes noise is a sure grandmotherly hit! This one said "Peak-a-boo, I see you!" whenever moved or touched). Anyway, back to the stormy night. Dad was at work, Emily was 18 months old and soundly asleep, the cats and the dog had retired to the basement for the night. I was reading a captivating book (Diana Gabaldon's Outlander) that I couldn't put down. The toy, up to that point known as Big Bird was quietly sitting by the fireplace. I was bundled up in the big comfy chair and the house was very, very quiet. At around 11pm, I was startled by the sound of "Peak-a-boo, I see you!". I looked up to see Big Bird looking at me with its maniac eyes from accross the living room. And nothing (baby, cats, dog) was around to make it talk! It scared the chipits out of me, I tell you! Freakaboo was born.
Celui-ci disait "Peak-a-boo, I see you!" dès qu'il était bougé ou touché.) Autour de 11 heures, un son m'a surprise: "Peak-a-boo, I see you!"

Always able to count on my supportive husband, I called him at work to describe what had happened and just talking to him calmed me down. However, the next morning, the first sight when I opened my eyes was Freakaboo staring at me from my dear husband's pillow. And a few days later, Freakaboo was sitting at the wheel when I unlocked the car to go work the night shift. Freakaboo was also known to be waiting in the fridge when I came back from the night shift and I also found him in the shower.

But shortly after, Freakaboo's soul had a short-circuit and he would not shut up. Even Daddy had enough and Freakaboo was found one morning with its plastic battery-operated heart/voice box savagely ripped out of its back. I still shudder (with relief) at the memory of the tiny wires hanging out, lifeless.

We thought that it was the end of Freakaboo... but no. Fast-forward ten months later on Christmas morning, 2004. Melanie had sent a large tin box marked "fragile - do not open until Christmas". I was already salivating at the idea of the fantastic fudge that was contained inside, as per tradition. But noooo... once we popped the lid open (after removing layers and layers of tape - man, she is very keen on protecting the fudge this year!), we came face to face with the evil Freakaboo. Thanks to the marvels of e-bay, Melanie, who was well aware of my adventures with Freakaboo, had decided to resurrect him... Freakaboo II was born! And we couldn't simply just get rid of it. Emily had seen it and was just simply overjoyed to see him come to life again! And bonus, he even came back wearing a T-shirt!

This one had a more varied repertoire... Move him and it is the classic "Peek-a-boo...". However, each leg or wing, when pinched, would have a diferent song. All in the anti-soothing Big Bird/Freakaboo voice.

Well, like any good (ah!) toy, Freakaboo II underwent cycles of popularity. I am afraid to admit that he spent the last few years in reclusive retirement somewhere in the basement. Enough to make a toy go nuts, he too had a breakdown one night and started to sing non-stop in a broken voice. This time the surgery by the man of the house was more delicate, but somehow his plastic heart/voice box could never fit back in the opening where it came from. Freakaboo lived his last few months with an empty external heart. He was destined to the big land of the Glad bags.

A surprise reprieve came however when the big flood of 2009 hit. In the hecticness of the packing up, the restoration employees saved Freakaboo from the Glad and put him in a storage box. Would Freakaboo II have the last word and survive yet again?

He may have if that box had been open by one of the innocent youngs of this house, but he was found this week by his first victim... me! I remembered and showed no mercy! See his look of surprise with his own defeat... and one last try at escape. The knot has been secured and the bag has been picked up by the garbage truck! Victory!

Victoire!

And Melanie, if you get us another Freakaboo, I promise to buy your kids a big drum set, a mike and a trumpet.

Rudolph the headless reindeer... Le p'tit renne sans tête...

I have always found that Halloween is too close to Christmas, and with the stores now displaying Christmas items BEFORE Halloween, it is really confusing kids, as evidenced by the following exchange between Emily and Paul, on December 1st:
- Dad, when are we going to do the Christmas decorations?
- Soon. Maybe this week-end. What should we do?
- We could put a lighted Santa outside.
- And maybe a reindeer.
- No, we cannot put the reindeer, because remember, its head fell off last year.
- Yeah... it wouldn't be very nice.
- But Daddy! I know what we should do! (excited voice) We could put the reindeer with its head on the ground next to the Santa and we could place a knife in Santa's hand!

So, should we laugh or worry?

The Halifax Escapade... L'escapade à Halifax...

All right, I promised a tale... It just didn't turn out exactly as I had imagined... We left the Valley after Kinderskills at 11h30 and Olivia fell asleep in the car on the way to Halifax. Degenerate mother that I am, I was too wrapped up in the enjoyment of a quiet drive to think that something was amiss. She woke up 10 minutes before the restaurant (Steak and Stein - no McJunk on this outing!) and still remained quiet. One might think that the prospect of turning 4 turns a gal introspective and make her ponder about her life, but no. Fever does that. Even without a thermometer, it became quite obvious during the meal. Olivia didn't speak, move or eat. This is Olivia we are talking about! The master speaker, mover or eater. She had turned mute, still and anorexic.

What to do... what to do? This child shouldn't be on a fun trip today. But we're here. We could drive back home empty handed and come back who-knows-when, but I can just imagine that the ride home would be a little more noisy without the promised treat from Build-a-bear Workshop. Since we already established that I was being a degenerate mother that day, you can guess the decision: to the mall we go! A stuffed toy we came to make, and a stuffed toy we'll get, darn it!

First stop, the drugstore, where we acquired a nice little bottle of bubble-gum flavored chewable tylenol (just admit you wished the adult form was like that too!). I got funny (and maybe judgemental) looks from people as we stopped on a bench as soon as we exited the store and where I proceeded to give Ollie the pills. (But my theory is that the one lady who gave me a judgemental look knew exactly what I was doing for having done so herself. Let whoever has never drugged their kid to hide-no-treat a fever throw the first stone!)

Next stop, Build-a-Bear Workshop, where: 1- half the mall was currently in line (OK, maybe I exaggerate, but so little) and 2- the store was short-staffed! And once Olivia has chosen her new fuzzy friend (a cat) she was happy just to have it as an empty shell and didn't want to have it stuffed! Picture the scene: the store is so full that I cannot just let her roam around while I keep our spot in the "stuffing" line. She has decided that she does not want the stuffie stuffed. The freshly ingested Tylenol has not taken effect yet. And she was not happy about waiting in line. The solution: "Do you want Mommy to carry you?". Of course, she did! Until out turn came. 20 minutes. (almost 2 days, really!)

A couple ahead of us took pictures at every little step of the stuffie making process, making their daughter-niece-whatever stop to pose every time... Slowing down the painfully long process even more. Didn't they see the long line-up? And if the wait was not painful enough, they were deep into public displays of affection (toward each other, not the kid! Which is why I suspect that she is a niece borrowed for a day to impress the new girlfriend... seriously, if both partners were the parents of the 7-8 year-old kid, they wouldn't kiss and grope each other every two minutes in a KID store! Or anywhere for that matter! Just stating a fact! Forget the stuffie making process, their "kid" and all the others were witnessing the preliminaries to the baby-making process!).

Finally, it was our turn! Olivia got to put the heart in her cat. Chose the very original name of Puss-Puss for it and pressed the pedal so the nice (overworked and starting to fray at the seams) lady stuffed Puss-Puss. Then to the fluffing station where kitty took an air shower. Now came the time to chose one outfit. No, only one. Just one. Because heaven forbid that big sister see you come home with two outfits... she may have lost the outfit, but she knows that at 13h35 on the afternoon of July 14th 2006, she got to chose one single outfit for her stuffed dog at the Buil-a-Bear Workshop in Quebec city. If we stray from the amount of clothes allocated by Mom by tradition, Mom will suffer... Back to Olivia chosing just one outfit: do you know how many outfits are available in those places? Millions!

Eventually we made it back to another line: the line for the cash register. The first line fills your stuffie with stuffing, this line depletes your wallet from its cash. And you guessed it: Slobbering-I-mean-Loving Couple was ahead of us, again! Where their daughter-niece-rental kid got oodles and oodles of outfits for her stuffie. Safe there! I'm with Olivia and not with Emily-the-accountant-with-a-fantastic-memory! She didn't pay attention to the whole thing as she was by then more mobile, chatty and generally busy. Tylenol had kicked in!

Another 20 minutes later, we had paid for Puss-Puss and her extravagant fushia and black dress, she was safely tucked in her house box and we were in line again! This time it was a short line for the computer terminal. Because it is a sacrilege to build your stuffie and leave the store without creating its birth certificate. Have you ever tried to type information on a computer keyboard with the help of a four year-old? Well, her cat almost got named "QWERRRTGGH"...

What a fun hour that was!

Well, we already established that I wouldn't win a mother-of-the-year award, right? So, did we head straight home after this? Nooo... It is unthinkable to come to the city without a trip to Michael's! (And for you, offended people who dare think that I am seeing someone secretely, Michael's is a craft store! And do you really think I could do that? Keep it secret with Olivia around?!) Where there was carts (to keep Olivia contained!) and bathrooms and no line ups. First real breather of the afternoon... Aaaahhh...

Then, it was straight home. And she fell asleep again on the way home. Another quiet drive.

As for that fever, we went to the doctor on Saturday and it is probably only a bad cold. A sample was taken and two hours later we got the confirmation that it was not strept throat. She was already starting to feel better at the clinic on Saturday as she recovered the ability to speak. The receptionist, the nurse and the doctor all got informed that it was her birthday. And at the end, just as we are about to leave, she informed the doctor that "we live on earth, you know" (this child is soo smart... she realises on her own the need to reiterate that fact sometimes after spending time with her!). And when the doctor left to prepare the sample that I was going to drop off to the hospital lab, Olivia looked at me and whispered "Is he gone to get my surprise?".

Ah, to see life through the eyes of a 3, no 4 year-old!

4 ans!

Call me crazy... Déclarez-moi folle...

... but I prefer to think that I am cool. And brave. And adventurous.
You see... I have a day off tomorrow. And it is Olivia's birthday on Saturday. So I am taking her on her first official Mother-Daughter shopping adventure in Halifax. And I have already told her. So I cannot back off and go for a calm realxing day alone (not that the idea crossed my mind, of course! Never...). Stay tuned, as there sure will be tales to be told when we return!

Miss Chatty Katy... Mademoiselle Jasette

As stated before, Olivia likes to talk, and talk, and talk. When she is not talking, she is singing or sleeping. As entertaining as it is, it can get to be a little too much, sometimes. Last week-end, while Emily and Paul were out, I was cleaning up the kitchen and Olivia was keeping a running commentary from the living room. And you cannot ignore her as almost every sentence starts with "Mommy... Mommy..." and ends with "Right, Mommy?". If you have been keeping up with this blog, you know that one should never, oh never, absentmindedly agree with the child! So, at some point I told her:
- Olivia, you've got to stop talking for a minute. I cannot hear myself think!
She paused, for a couple of seconds, looked up at me and declared:
- Well, I cannot hear yourself think too. Bla, bla, bla, bla, bla...

And the night before, after returning from her birthday party at Superstore (I know, "a birthday party at a grocery store"? you'll ask, thinking I totally lost it, but it was the nicest busy-kids-no-mess-in-my-house-just-show-up birthday party!), she snuggled closely and told me "I love you", gazing in my eyes... She then, holding my face between her hands, followed with "Mommy, you are the..." My heart just swelled at the thought of what was coming... I was so impressed that she realised that we had prepared this birthday party for her and she was grateful for it. I almost heard the sound of a scratched record, when instead of the "best" mommy declaration, she told me:
"Mommy, you are the biggest mommy in the whole world!"
A moment of stunned silence followed, and then the sound of a 7 year-old laughing her head off and the sight of a dad trying (very unsuccessfully!) to hide a laugh.

But I know she meant "best". I am almost sure of it. I think that's what she wanted to say. Maybe. Biggest is best in toddler's world. Right?

Just ask... Demande...

After sending Olivia put something in her room, I heard a loud scream followed by a good cry:
- Olivia, what happened?
- Em... Emily... (sob)... Em... (sob)...
So I turned to Big Sister
- What did you do?
- Nothing! I just said "Hi" nicely to her and she screamed!
Mmmm... There is obviously more to this story, my mommy senses tell me...
- Where were you when you said "Hi"?
- In her closet...

- Em... Emily... (sanglot)... Em... (sanglot)...
Je me suis donc tournée vers Grande Soeur
- Qu'as-tu fait?
- Rien!
- Où étais-tu quand tu as dit "Allo"?
- Dans son garde-robe...

Spending time one on one with Olivia, wherever and whenever, is like an Olympic Marathon for the ears. The girl can chat up a storm, and then some. So, last week, Daddy asked her
- Olivia, why do you talk so much?
- Because I can! And I want to!
As honest an answer as can be, don't you think?

- Olivia, pourquoi parles-tu tant?
- Parce que je peux! Et je veux!
Plutôt honnête comme réponse, ne trouvez-vous pas?

Bob and company... Bob et compagnie...

This blog contains a high level of immaturity (no news there!) and a subject matter that may offend some readers. Reader discretion is advised.

A while ago, I realised that, while I was reading bedtime stories, Olivia usually engaged in a very serious hunting expedition. Booger hunting. Deep in the confines of her nasal cavities. She was fairly discreet about it, and kept it in the opposite side to where I was reading from, but like any good hunter, she displayed her trophies. Lined up on her headboard. (I guess I should consider myself lucky that she is strictly a trophy hunter... only for display!). Still, there is no other way to describe it: it was disgusting! So now, before going to bed, we do a supervised booger catch with this marvel of technology called a tissue. No more covert operations for the naked fingers.

You would think that this is the end of the story, but remember, this is Ollie we are talking about. The kid obviously is very proud of her nasal discharge, as she now gives a name to "everybody" that comes out of her nose... She has to see in the tissue and then will announce "who" it is. Bob is a frequent visitor, but in the last few weeks, we also had Bob's cousin (a bit on the small side), Bob's grand-mother (dry and skinny) and Bob's cat (very small). There is also Greenie, but you do not want a description!

So consider yourelf warned... If you visit us, and Olivia asks you if you want to meet Bob, say NO! (And I apologize on mu daughter's behalf to all the Bobs of this world...)

Halloween!

"Trick or Treat. Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. If you don't, I don't care. I'll pull down your underwear." This is a favorite part of a loved book in our house. Good thing that Paul thought of doing a little review on manners before setting out, because it is what Olivia was planning to say!

Eeyore and Simba did have the occasional spat on whose turn it was to ring the doorbell, rendering the said doorbell useless as their presence was then loudly announced!

And our lovely pumpkins... The girls couldn't wait to carve them, but as soon as they touched a finger to the gooey inside, they prefered a spectator's role. Like last year! I'm getting pretty good at this though, don't you think!
First one, the spider, complete with eyes!

Next, the cat! And I was not aware that this pumpkin had "issues" until I carved through it... Obviously, I wouldn't have planned the gooey brown hole exactly under kitty's tail!

Clover's palace... Le palais de Clover...

We are doing renovations so I can have a craft/laundry room (instead of the current laundry/storage room) and I can hardly wait until it is ready. One of the necessary changes is that Clover moves from his protable crate to his own private room under the stairs, complete with a nice comfy doggy bed. (Yes, I know, it means that HE got to use MY room first!).

So, how does one convince an old dog that the new room is a good thing? By holding a roomwarming party in there! (And confirms that it is spacious enough since 2 kids, an energetic dog and a mom can fit in there!)

Guess where... Devine où...

Everybody knows that moms are supposed to know everything. All the time. Including where every little toys are. Even after they haven't been sighted for 6 months. (Actually, I know for real where those are likely to be: the belly of the vacuum cleaner or the municipal dump. But that is my secret... I chose to feign ignorance sometimes!). I may not know what to have for supper tonight, but I know that the Bratz shoe (don't get me started on that *%#$ doll!) that is under the shirt that is under the pillow under my daughter's bed is the one that matches the one that is in the pink purse, in the purple backpack that is lying at the bottom of the clothes hamper. Who am I kidding!? I don't know those things, but I'm expected to! As stated by my daughters regularly, by statements like "Mommyyyyyy, where is my thingimagig, you know the one that Olivia touched with her big toe 3 weeks ago while you were at work?" OK, maybe I exaggerate, but only slightly...While I cannot keep track of every little stray (but very important) tidbit of junk that my daughters see as treasure, I am usually pretty good at keeping track of important stuff, like clothes, keys or the kids themselves. So it was with growing concern that, last week, I couldn't find Olivia's gymnastic suit. When it was time to leave. Of course. I looked everywhere I could think of. Up-ended the laundry basket, rummaged through every drawer. That's when Olivia asked :
- Mom, what you doing?
- I'm looking for your gym suit.
- It's in my room.
- No, I looked and it is not there (said through clenched teeth).
- Oh Mom... It's there! (said with the mother of all eye rolls) Come
see!
She took my hand, and took me to her room. Where she proceeded to remove a family of stuffed toys from the top of a suitcase. Removed the suitcase from the top of her toy box. Removed the lid of the toy box. Removed all the toys from the toy box. What was at the very bottom, perfectly laid out?... you guessed it, the gym suit!

Cousins!

The girls just love their cousins! Which warms my heart since we don't see them that often...

First example: Labor Day week-end, Moncton, New Brunswick.
Heather had the fantastic idea to meet for a week-end, because we all agreed that to wait until next summer to see them in Quebec was way too long! So Emily and I met Heather, Alain and Casandra for a two nights-three days family package at the Ramada Crystal Palace. (By popular vote in the Maillet household, it was determined that everybody would enjoy the trip better if miss Ollie spent quality time with Daddy at home. The vote was unanimous!) Despite the obvious fun that we had in such a location in such great company, the week-end revealed some pretty precious moments: a mother-daughter road trip that did in fact bring us closer (complete with an extra night just the two of us at the Delta. Gotta love Air Miles! And I also mean litteraly closer since sleeping with her is like having an octopus velcroed to your body... legs and arms become tentacles in the night, I swear!), a fantastic evening where (miracle of all miracles!) three kids enjoyed a swim for over two hours under our eyes letting us two gals catch up and talk like we haven't done in a long, long, (very) long time, and the following photo... (If I needed a single reminder of why that week-end was important, it would be this picture.)

But don't worry, Olivia got to enjoy a cousin too a few weeks ago. Sarah came from Fredericton to spend Thanksgiving week-end with us. The way the girls were getting excited at the mention that their cousin was coming, I was afraid that they were expecting another kid to play with. So I reminded them that she was a grown-up. I guess the lesson hit home with Olivia, since she woke up on the Friday morning and asked "So, when is my own grown-up Sarah going to be here?" And once Sarah was here, I think she was sitting down for no more than a few minutes before miss O made herself right at home on her lap, as shown on the picture. Position she occupied quite permanently during the week-end!

And the next day, while getting ready to go see a movie, Olivia looked up at Sarah and instructed her that she needed to sit next to her at the movie because she (O) loves her (S). Nothing like a very stern and direct love declaration by a 3 year-old! And within minutes of getting up at 11h am (and was I proud to remind Sarah that she used to think that I slept a lot when we visited them 10 years ago...!), Sarah was informed by O that it was about time she got dressed. She can be such a loving little dictator!

Serenade... Sérénade...

My 3 year-old loves to sing. She sings to herself all the time, and to the whole world, whether the whole world appreciates it or not. So, it was only natural that when we drove back from gymnastic tonight at 6pm, I was treated to a serenade the whole way. I cannot possibly write down all the lyrics, and could never render the improvised tune, but I do recall snipets of it:
"Oh, how I love grilled cheese...
My dear grilled cheese...
I love him so much, he is my friend and he is a grilled cheese...
My tummy loves him too...
Have you every seen a grilled cheese?... They are made with cheese...
I'm dreaming of a grilled cheese...
Clover loves grilled cheese...
Mommy and Daddy love grilled cheese...
Emily loves grilled cheese...
My favorite grilled cheese...
Would you like a grilled cheese?...
Lovely grilled cheese..."
OK, at this point, I started to get an inkling that the kid was hungry and maybe would like to eat a grilled cheese sandwich. Wild guess, but us mothers have intuition you see... And then, on the spur of the moment, she changed the song. She actually kept the tuneless tune, but changed the lyrics completely...
"I won't go to beeeeeeed...
I will never go to bed again...
I'm not tired (yes, but mommy is!)...
I don't need sleep...
Have you ever gone to bed?
Clover goes to bed...
Mommy and Daddy go to bed...
Emily goes to bed...
I don't go to bed...
Mommy says it's OK... (NO, she doesn't!)
I can stay up all night...
Eating grilled cheese..."
Which she didn't, as there was a leftover of mac'n'cheese when we got home and she did go to bed after!

Single again... Célibataire à nouveau...

Don't worry, I am not talking about myself! I am talking about Olivia. First, I'll backtrack a bit and explain that this summer she declared that she got married. Don't be offended by not being invited... As the mother of the bride, I was not even told until after the fact. Apparently, they eloped at day care. It all happened on a rainy day (don't know if it was raining, it just add to the romance of the description!) when they were sitting on the couch together. Her Romeo turned, gazed in her eyes and kissed her. And then TA-DAA! They were married, just like that. During our vacation, she frequently mentioned him and declared that she missed her husband! I suspect that she was a little bit high-maintenance however, from the rules that she told me she gave him: he couldn't kiss another girl and he could only marry her (because apparently, every kiss is a new wedding!). (Oh, her future boyfriends just have no idea what they'll be in for!).

So, back to the present and the newly single gal... I hadn't heard about Romeo (You will have guessed by now that this is not his real name, but to protect his privacy, we'll call him that) for quite a while, so I asked her how he was. "Good" she replied, "but we're no longer married". "Oh, what happened?" "Well, he has a boyfriend now!" And then she started to sing "Romeo and Boyfriend are kissing in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G..."

Oh boy! This kid will be a teenager someday...!

Oh boy! Cette enfant sera une adolescente un jour!

So big... Si grande...

And to think I was a little worried... about the little one starting preschool! In all honesty, I knew that she was ready for preschool, but was preschool ready for her? Well, apparently so, as she simply loves it! Yesterday, grand-papa and I tagged along to the class trip to Gates U-Pick in Port Williams. The following snap shots are my favorites... and yes, I do smell a scrapbook page too!

The Zebra Attack... L'attaque du zèbre...

Bedtime conversation tonight:
- Olivia, how did you get the scratch on your leg?
- Oh that? I just went to the zoo and the zebra bit (OK, she said bited!) a chunk off my leg. And I saw a dragon and he let me take him in my hands and he liked me. He was nicer than the zebra.

And the other day, at supper she described how she had been in a firetruck in the afternoon. Since she was at Bev's, I was surprised that she didn't tell us that she was taking the kids to visit the fire station, but Olivia was quite convincing. That's when I thought I would test the veracity of the story:
- What color was the firetruck?
- Pink and purple and Bev was driving it!

Now, can you imagine the excuses we'll get when she breaks curfew at 16?!

Supergirls!

It is always hard to explain to an unexpected visitor why there are undies in the middle of the living room floor. And only someone who lives with kids will believe you when you explain that they are in fact discarded superhero gear...

You know... Vous savez...

...that you live with little girls when the model of the Mustang GT is used as a Polly Pocket clothes storage area!

PS: As for why we have a model of a Mustang, I am not too sure myself... It was a birthday present to Emily from her grandmother. Enough said.
