The wheel is turning... Et la roue tourne...

You know when in cartoons they show the inside of someone's head as a hamster endlessly running in a wheel? Well imagine that this same hamster is running in an oval wheel, after 3 espressos, sporting a mohawk hairdo during a hurricane... Sometimes, I feel like this is what the brain of my toddler would look like! Well, I sure cannot keep up with her ideas! The following all occured in the span of 20 minutes last night...
After supper, we decided to divide and conquer... Paul and Em to piano and me and Ollie to the grocery store for a few items before meeting back for ice cream if behavior was good all around! P and E left first and we got ready to leave too. Since O's coat was still muddy from playing outside during the day, I took out a new-to-her yellow coat to wear. Well she was so impressed that she had to parade it in front of the cat. And apparently they had an argument. There was no witness but the cat allegedly disagreed with her coat color... This is how it was reported: "Puss Puss told me that my coat was purple. He's crazy. It's yellow!" Yes, HE's the crazy one all right... Then, within seconds, she reminded me of the shopping rules, hands on her hips and all: "No cryin', no fightin' and no "I want"s!" (If you think that the no fighting rule is over the top, just know that there is not enough room in a two-seater grocery cart for squabbling sibblings...And it can be the source of way too many decibels.) Anyway, she proved that she does (sometimes) pay attention when I speak!
And while driving to the store, I was serenaded the whole way. Do you remember the song "Farmer in the Dell"? (The farmer in the dell, the farmer in the dell, I-O the derry-O, the farmer in the dell... then the farmer takes a wife... the wife takes a dog... etc...) Well, in Ollie's version, "the bunny gets the dragon"...
Starting to picture that hamster yet?

Moments...

Now, this is the way we watch movies, at home, comfy with Taryn and Macy, not at the boring old theater!

This is an extremely rare moment... peace time!

Artistic moment... I gave them each two brushes, a big one and a small one. With the small brush, I showed O how to rinse her brush between colors: dip and twirl in the water and wipe on the paper towel. (I know, why bother?!). But she showed me that she can follow instructions to a T... She painted with the big brush and between every color, she would put it down, take the small brush, rinse the small brush then dip the big one in a new color. The small brush never touched any paint but was cleaned all along!

Moment artistique...

Tender moment for the two-legged ones and traumatic moment for the four-legged one...

First time! Première fois!

For Ollie at the movie that is... This week is March break and I took the week off. The movie theater is offering twonie matinees all week with a choice of two movies: Tale of Despereaux (an adventurous mouse cartoon) and Hotel for Dogs (a cute kids and dogs movie). We had obviously opted for the cartoon, but just before getting the tickets, my friend P called (between the two of us we were taking two 3-year-olds and two 6 year-olds to the movie) to say that a 4 year-old she knew came back semi-traumatized because of a scary scene in Tale of Despereaux... So the cartoon was out and if I cancelled the movie outing, there would be hell to pay since I had already announced the event! So, Hotel for Dogs we went to see... Yes, I should have known better: an actual movie doesn't hold the attention of a toddler for very long...

So, we met with the friends at the theater and proceeded to find seats. We were lucky to get something near the aisle, but it was in the fourth row. And obviously, a movie is not a movie without popcorn so we somehow managed to get everybody seated with a kiddie deal on their lap! (Why it is a "deal" I don't know as you pay over $6 for 2 cups of popcorn, a box of smarties, a kool-aid and tattoos, but anyway, it is part of the experience!)

We made it through the previews happily chomping away and the movie had just started, the title is not even up yet, when I heard, in a non-whispering voice, "I need to pee!" (This is after going to the bathroom at home, and asking again before proceeding to our seats!). So, we make our way to the aisle and picked up the other 3 year-old on the way (the gals bathroom trip apparently start early!). My 3 year-old thought that the lighted steps were just fascinating and ran up to the back of the room where she started to run back and forth while I was coming with our 3 year-old friend, who was way more careful around those lighted steps. I managed to grab my little runner and we all went to the bathroom. I didn't have to talk much as apparently, 3 year-olds can chat up a storm on the subject of their respective pee! When we returned to our theater, Ollie ran down the steps and was intercepted just in time by P before she made it to the front of the room to run some more. I, of course, was slow coming down with our little friend.

Probably 10 minutes went by uneventful, when Ollie decided that it was enough with the popcorn, she wanted her smarties now! I tried to make her wait (we still had over an hour to go and this was the last snack after all!), but she answered with a distinct "no" that threatened to turn into a scream, so the box was opened. For reasons that are only clear to her, she then dumped the smarties into her popcorn... creating the need to fish through popcorn for each morsel... as if there was not enough popcorn on our seats already! When taking a sip of juice, she managed to get a few drips on the front of her T-shirt. And all of a sudden, the kid who can ignore a panties accident for hours, who can play in the snow with boots soaked through and who can get her shirts wet to the elbows when she washes her hands couldn't tolerate a wet square inch in front of her shirt... That's when she handed me her shirt and I turned to discover a toddler naked from the waist up. It is extremely difficult to negociate the return of a T-shirt where it belongs while making sure that both voices remain a whisper. 15 minutes later, I had managed to return the T-shirt on the kid, but she insisted on wearing it with the front over her head... creating an exposed belly and shoulders pulled up. And then she was cold. And didn't want to wear her coat. Or return her shirt to its normal position. And then she needed to pee again. Except that once we walked out of the room, she announced that she didn't want to go to the bathroom... The decision was made for her that she was going anyway, and she hitched an unvolontary ride on my shoulder, doing a pretty good rendition of a siren (the sound, not the fish!). Before we went back in, I set clear expectations: we had to remain in our seats and watch the rest of the movie, quietly and fully dressed. A little problem surfaced as she didn't want to sit in her seat but in Emily's. Not an option! I offered my seat. No. After a little bit more negociation, it was determined that we would both sit in my seat. (Insert sigh here...)

I had the crazy idea that maybe if we snuggled tight she would fall asleep... Well, we all have our lunatic moments. It seems I had more chance of being hit by a train in the theater than Olivia falling asleep. Not only she didn't fall asleep, but she started to kick the occupied seat in front of us. I whispered a warning loud enough for the teenager in front to think that I was on top of the situation (one can always pretend!) and that was greeted by a half-growl, half-whine... in other words, a precursor to a shriek... When she resumed kicking, I held her feet and used the ultimate threat: you want to go wait in the car? (We did that once and boy, was she ugly! But she still remembers!) She crossed her arms tight on her chest and offered me a two inches pout, but she did stop!
Coudonc, on a tous nos moments lunatiques!

And when the lights came on at the end of the movie, her first words: "I need to pee"! If you ask me how the movie was, I only have a vague idea, but the 6 year-olds loved it!
Anyway, it went pretty well, don't you think?

Heard in my house... Entendu au passage

3 things that made me laugh out loud:
3 choses qui m'ont fait rire:

1) When O and Clover (the dog) walked by me in the kitchen and I heard "OK, now it is your turn to be the kitty!"

2) Yesterday, before taking O to the movie for the first time, I was reviewing the "rules" with both of them... (You know, remain in your seat, when your popcorn is gone you don't get mine, that sort of things!) So, when I told them that we cannot talk at the movie, I asked them to show me how they would whisper if they needed to tell me something... This is how it went:
Me: Show me how you'll whisper
Em: (normal voice) I don't know what to say
Me: Just say "I'm whispering"
Em: (whisper) I'm whispering...
Me: Now Ollie, show me how you'll whisper
Ol: (whisper and twinkle in her eyes) Mommy tooted!
Well, at least I knew she understood the concept of whispering!
Moi: Montre-moi comment tu chuchotes
Moi: Maintenant Ollie, montre-moi comment tu chuchotes

3) This week-end, Emily told me that for the next school concert, she will make sure to bow and curse! Now if that doesn't paint a vivid picture in your mind... On this one, I couldn't keep the laugh out of my voice when I explained the difference between a curse and a curtsy!
Désolée, celle-la ne se traduit pas!

Bath Chat and Mud Bath... Jaserie de bain et bain de boue...

Soon I'll be using a tape recorder when I give a bath to the beauties as it is always when the most unexpected conversations occur...

Let me set the scene... last night, 2 girls in the bathtub. To encourage them to wash themselves, I use foam soap that I spray on their bellies with the instruction to get covered in pink! The only way to achieve that is for them to scrub it everywhere while standing up... a disguised way to wash themselves before a big dive in the water (the equivalent of a rinse cycle!). So, last night, after the foam was sprayed, they were scrubbing madly when the wise 6 year-old offered this priceless piece of advice to her little sister:
Em: Ollie, remember to scrub everywhere but don't put any soap on your penis
Ol: OK!
(I always remind them not to scrub the foam soap in their privates, but this was definitely a different choice of words!)
Mom: Emily, do you know what a penis is?
Em: Yes
Mom: What is it?
Em: It is where you pee from.
(Oh, I get it, a pee-nis)
Mom: Well, only boys pee from a penis, you know that, right?
I was treated to a blank stare for a few seconds before she resumed scrubbing and declared:
- Of course I knew that, I was only joking!
I waited a couple of minutes before excusing myself from the bathroom for a moment... I couldn't burst out laughing in front of my child, could I? And of course, I had to share this one with her father!

As for the mud bath, take a peak at this happy kid! The picture is a courtesy of Bev, Day Care Provider extraordinaire! You know it is fun when you cannot be bothered to stop to wipe!

Photos!

No words needed... the look says it all! "Please, get me out of here!"

"S'il-te-plait, emmène-moi d'ici!"

The Bunk Bed Fairy... who knew that she was that hairy?

Obviously, the Energizers ran out!

Splish...Splash...

That's the sound our feet made in the basement earlier this week... We went to bed Monday night during heavy rain serene with the knowledge that our sub pump was working well in case the rain got too heavy. And when we heard the same pump first thing in the morning, we thought that everything was well... until we went downstairs... in some areas, there was 4 inches of water! Yes, the sub pump worked, but the water pressure disconnected the hose and the pump was pumping the water ON the floor! Emily never noticed when she got up and came upstairs. As for the dog, I still don't understand how a dog that will bark and whimper at the sound of the washing machine can remain perfectly silent as he sees the cat's bowl float by his crate!

So the day was spent moving stuff, mopping stuff, throwing stuff out before ripping out rug and laminate floor. The next day, the professionals hired by the insurance company were here to assess the damages... Floors and lower part of the walls have to be redone in the computer room, the playroom and Emily's room. They were here again on Thursday to move everything out to storage. Right now, it feels as if we are living in an apartment with everybody crammed upstairs!

Silver lining in all this: we still had a little bit of luck in this disaster... the brand new washer and dryer installed the day before were barely touched by the water and the freezer, fridge and furnace all survived unharmed. And we were home to catch the problem quickly...!

This is NOT how I had envisioned spring cleaning!
