Splish...Splash...

That's the sound our feet made in the basement earlier this week... We went to bed Monday night during heavy rain serene with the knowledge that our sub pump was working well in case the rain got too heavy. And when we heard the same pump first thing in the morning, we thought that everything was well... until we went downstairs... in some areas, there was 4 inches of water! Yes, the sub pump worked, but the water pressure disconnected the hose and the pump was pumping the water ON the floor! Emily never noticed when she got up and came upstairs. As for the dog, I still don't understand how a dog that will bark and whimper at the sound of the washing machine can remain perfectly silent as he sees the cat's bowl float by his crate!

So the day was spent moving stuff, mopping stuff, throwing stuff out before ripping out rug and laminate floor. The next day, the professionals hired by the insurance company were here to assess the damages... Floors and lower part of the walls have to be redone in the computer room, the playroom and Emily's room. They were here again on Thursday to move everything out to storage. Right now, it feels as if we are living in an apartment with everybody crammed upstairs!

Silver lining in all this: we still had a little bit of luck in this disaster... the brand new washer and dryer installed the day before were barely touched by the water and the freezer, fridge and furnace all survived unharmed. And we were home to catch the problem quickly...!

This is NOT how I had envisioned spring cleaning!

  1. And you'll get a new paint job and a new computer desk out of the deal :)
