A few days before Christmas, I was at work, obviously working hard, but in the back of my mind was this on-going loop of all the things I needed to do at home before Christmas. Then, at the end of the afternoon, a co-worker who lives not far from me, came into my office to let me know that the power was out in Riverview. A phone call to a friend who also lives in the same general neighbourhood, confirmed it. The NB Power website listed the outage without an estimated time for resolution...
As I was contemplating the possible outcome: returning home to a dark and cold house with hungry kids who are afraid of the dark I immediately thought of the solution. This mom is so smart! I should write a mommy help column in a newspaper. I am not a yummy mommy, but a brainy mommy!
You can imagine the squeals of delight when I went to pick up the girls at school and told them that we were on our way to the movie theatre since there was no power at home. So instead of a cold dark house, we spent the next couple of hours in a warm dark hall, enjoying a nice hot vegetarian supper ( hot popcorn and grape kool-aid) watching Yogi Bear. Periodically though, I just had to repress a shudder at the idea of all the stuff I was not doing at home.
It was close to 8 o'clock when we returned home and oh glory, there was power! It is only once our coats and boots were off and I took a stroll around to reset the time on all the appliances that I noticed something weird... First, it was the stove. Since this is our first ever power outage in the new house and the kitchen appliances came with it, I was definitely amazed that the time had reset itself (hey, don't call me stupid right away, we have an alarm clock that does that... without a battery!). By the time I looked at the microwave, I was starting to get a little puzzled (hey, it was a long day and I was tired, I am allowed to be a little slow on the uptake here!). But then I went to the computer and it was on... However dim it was, the lightbulb finally came on... we had never lost power in the first place!
OK, so maybe the career as an newspaper columnist is out the window. Maybe I am more of a dummy mummy... I can hear you, "don't be too hard on yourself, you are not a dummy". Yes, I would like to believe that too. But there is more... You see, the ladies were quite concerned that it would be too scary to sleep in cold total darkness so I told them not to worry that if it came to that, they could sleep in my bed... They were just so disappointed when we came back to a lighted house because they wouldn't get to sleep with me (while I cannot find words to describe how relieved I was!) that in order to avoid a full fledge tantrum from both girls, I promised that during the holidays they would get to sleep with me for one night while daddy was in Nova Scotia.
Funny how every day they reminded me of that promise and since I finally delivered last week, they conveniently forgot about it and try to convince me that I still owe on my promise...
