The single child... L'enfant unique...

So, we're driving tonight, we being Emily, Olivia and myself. For once, there is nobody talking, arguing, or whining in the car. At the most, both girls are humming a song. That's when it happened.
O: Mommy, why did you guys have two kids?
Me (quite unsure about how to answer that!): What do you mean?
O: I mean, why did you guys have two kids?
Me: Because we wanted both of you!
O: But why have two of us?
Me: As I said, because we wanted two of you! Should we have had one, two or ten kids? (And yes, as it came out of my mouth, I knew that was not a wise thing to say...)
O: Just one... me!

A look in the rearview mirror confirmed that big sister was really not taking it well... Tears started to go down her cheeks. Oh boy, what would I have given at that moment for a screaming fit (that I cannot stand anymore) instead of the silent hurt...
Me: Emily, she doesn't mean it.
O: Yes, I mean it!
Me: Olivia, that is a very hurtful thing to say to your sister. She is all sad now and you know that she is the best sister you could have.
O: Now you are making me feel sad... (said with a trembling lower lip... OK mom, time to play it carefully so as to avoid a full blown double melt-down...)
Me: Emily, she really doesn't mean it for real and anyway I am sure that sometimes you think of the same thing! That life would be calmer without a little sister.
E: No! I would never think that!
Me: Are you sure? Because I remember when you wanted to sell your sister at a yard sale...
E: That's not the same! I didn't mean it for real!
O: You wanted to sell me at a yard sale?
Me: There you go! Those are things you say without meaning them for real. Do you understand?
E: Yeah...
The rest of the ride was uneventful but done in relative silence... I bet they were thinking of how much they could get from selling the other at a yard sale...
