Grrrrr

3 am the other night. Paul was away for the week, as his busy season is still under way. It was me and the beauties and the zoo. I wake up suddenly, the kind of "something's going on" waking up, but I have no idea why. I see that the cat is also on alert at the foot of my bed, but it may be because of my own startled reaction. We both listen. I am holding my breath. She is holding her purr. Then it comes: Maaaaaaaaman! It sounds so loud in the middle of the night!

Jumping out of bed to show up before the next yell and deal with only one awake kid instead of two, I didn't make it in time and the next "Maaaaaaaaman" is launched from full lungs. "Shhhhh Olivia" I say as I arrive in her room, "what is going on?" "I had a nightmare!" she answers, calmly. Oh so calmly.

Now I understand that nightmares can be quite terrifying and can leave quite an impression. I also understand that one may need her mommy at such trying time. However, despite my half-open eyes and half-working brain, I made the following observations:
- the "Maaaaaaaman" yells were not filled with terror. They were the kind that announce a happy kid entering the house;
- there was no sobbing, no tears, no hiccups, no whimpering indicating that the nightmare was so scary;
- instead of hiding under the covers, the kid in question was relaxing on her pillow with her hands under her head;
- the "I had a nightmare!" was said with the same tone as "Wow, do I have a good story for you or what!"

- les cris de "Maaaaaaaaman" n'était pas remplis de terreur. Ils étaient plutôt du genre qui annonce l'arrivée d'un enfant heureux à la maison;
- il n'y avait pas de sanglots, de larmes, de hocquet, de pleurnichement indicant que le cauchemar était si épeurant;
- au lieu de se cacher sous les couvertes, l'enfant en question relaxait confortablement sur son oreiller avec les mains sous la tête;

I knew better than to ask what the nightmare was... Been there, done that, and usually get such a convoluted story that borderlines on improvisation! Wanting to get back to bed before my alarm clock rang at 5h45, I reminded her that there was not much I could do (a few tears would have earned her back patting and staying with her for a few minutes but since she seemed in the mood for happy hour, I decided that she could manage!) and she needed to go back to sleep. She smiled, said OK and then informed me that she yelled at me because she couldn't go in my room to tell me about her nightmare because she would have had to walk on the cold floor on her bare feet and didn't want to get cold...

Her next nightmare will likely involve a dishevelled growling mommy...
