A couple of nights ago, after a particularly busy family-oriented week-end partially away from home, I was putting Olivia to bed, after her dad had said goodnight. She got up to close the door and put a finger to her lips to indicate that we should whisper. And then, with a glimmer in her eyes, she started talking...
- Mommy, you know what?
- No. What?
- It is a surprise.
- What is?
- Next week-end, daddy will take you and I and Emily somewhere special. And it is a surprise.
- Really? Can you give me a hint?
- Well, I don't really know what letter it starts with and we've never been there, so no. I can't.
- Do you know where it is?
- No...
- Does daddy know about the surprise?
- No! It is a surprise, remember!
And I checked with her dad later, and it was the first he heard about it as well. So we shared a laugh and thought it was over. You'd think that by now, I would know my own daughter...
So last night, while Paul is away for work, we have our daily family phone call. Of course, while she is on the phone, I only get one side of the conversation. With her, it is enough to follow the whole thing:
"Hi daddy!... Do you know why I said wait before taking the phone?... It was so I could get my hair away from my ear so you can hear me better... Do you hear me well now daddy?... Yes, me too, I hear you... Did you know that my tooth is more loose than yesterday?... No?... Well my tooth is more loose than yesterday... Yes, I can twist it like this. See?... Oh right! Silly me!... Hey daddy, guess what we are doing on Saturday!... Do you want to guess?... Oh, since you don't know, I'll tell you... On Saturday, the whole family, well not Clover and not Fido and not Ginger and not Hazel, we'll go to the beach, then to the pool and to Irving and then to the restaurant... And you can pick whatever restaurant you like!... Like there is Pizza Delight or St-Hubert... Which one do you prefer?... Pizza Delight or St-Hubert?... Because you can pick whichever you want!... For real... Pizza Delight or St-Hubert?... You know what? You can think about it and tell me tomorrow... OK?... Good night..."
Chais-tu quoi? Tu peux y penser et me le dire demain... OK?... Bonne nuit..."
And later on that evening, she lost that wiggly tooth! An event like this warrants another call to Daddy, of course:
"Hello Daddy I lost my tooth... Hello?... Hello?... Oh, it is still ringing!... Hello Daddy?... It's me!... Olivia... Olivia Maillet... ME! (giggles)... How are-Oh yeah, I lost my tooth!... Yes... Yes, the tooth fairy will come tonight... yes... yes... OK... good ni-WAIT! Have you decided which restaurant you want to go to?... Remember, wherever you want... Pizza Delight or St-Hubert!... You think about it now... OK... Good night..."
OK... bonne nu-ATTENDS! As-tu décidé quel restaurant tu voulais aller?... Rappelle-toi, n'importe où tu veux aller... Pizza Delight ou St-Hubert!... Penses-y maintenant... OK... Bonne nuit..."
By the way, if you were surprised by the wish to go to Irving, it was not a mistake. For my daughter it is a pilgrimage to go to Irving, home of the slushies (at least she doesn't call them flushies anymore!) and pink and purple Nerds. It all started a couple of years ago when Paul would take them there on Friday afternoon for a treat after picking them up from the babysitter. She started to plan her whole week after these outings (Is it the day we go to Irving yet?). You could distract her from major things (like the fact that I was taking her older sister and older cousins for the whole day to the grocery store (oops, a slip of the tongue, I meant to say amusement park!) but with the promise of a trip to Irving, she willingly stayed home with her dad! And never questioned the fact that we came home from a day long grocery shopping expedition empty handed and wearing the entrance bracelets!). She is the only child I know who would be tickled-pink to find an Irving gift card in her Christmas stocking. Some kids detect McDonald's from kilometers away, mine sniffs out the Irving the same way!
